Description

 

To save power in battery power applications, Adafruit Feather boards are periodically placed in a deep sleep mode. The problem is that even in deep sleep mode the Feather board will still consume 2mA. This constant power drain results in a larger battery or reduced battery life. Using the PowerMiser FeatherWing you can reduce the deep sleep power drain to 16uA and in some cases as low as 220nA. That reduction in current during deep sleep mode could extend you battery life by more than 125 times.

 

In addition to providing a way to reduce power consumption during deep sleep mode the PowerMiser FeatherWing includes an accelerometer, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a FerroElectric RAM memory. By incorporating these devices along with a "Power On Interrupt" (POI) circuit, the FeatherWing board can now apply power to the Feather board when the accelerometer detects a free-fall or motion detection event or on a preset time in the RTC.

 

The PowerMiser Feather wing does this by controlling when battery power is supplied to the Adafruit Feather. In this mode the battery is connected to the PowerMiser FeatherWing instead of the Feather. During normal operation, power is supplied from the FeatherWing to the Feather, but during deep sleep the FeatherWing removes all power to the Feather but keeps the low powered FeatherWing powered so that the unit can awake from the deep sleep mode on a preprogrammed event.
